Is the use of progressive tense correct here?

I was struggling to come up with a solution to this problem. It was a few months ago when I realized that most of the requests were made via phone and that this was gradually having a negative impact on our team performance, because my colleagues and I were continually interrupted by the phone, thus losing our concentration.

It's the ideal tense here. The negative impact was and still is ongoing.
