The day I had to work on the switchboard I kept cutting people off!
What is this sentence about? There is no other context except this single sentence which was given as an example in the grammar book. I have a very vague idea what this "switchboard" might be, and why the speaker "kept cutting people off". If he works as a telephone operator (I guess it's something like that), and his job is to connect and cut off phone calls, why is he talking about only cutting off, and not connection? Due to the lack of information (and maybe due to the exclamation mark also), I've pictured in my head a weird person who takes pleasure in cutting people off. What was going on on that mysterious day when he had to work on a switchboard?
