In what context do you want to use these questions?

"All the other passengers had been woken up in the night to catch the plane, but for some reason or other we had been forgotten. You can imagine ___ we felt." I guess "how" should be used to fill in the blank. But when or in what context would we use " What ....you feel?" instead? Thank you for your reply.

What would you feel if someone punched you?

I don't think that is a good example on its own, but contrasting, what would you feel if someone punched you? with, how would you feel if someone punched you? might be more helpful.

How asks about your general state. What asks for specific feelings. Although What are you feeling? is not impossible, it would only occur in rare circumstances. For example, some kinds of brain surgery are performed when the patient is conscious in order to minimize damage to critical areas. The surgeon might ask the patient What are you feeling now? while stimulating a spot.
