Okay, now I get it. Use "arrived" instead of "gone." Oh, and stick with either "Carl" or "Clark." ;-)

I'd use "arrived" or "turned up" but definitely not "gone".

He was surprised because his friend had arrived fifteen minutes early.
He was surprised because his friend had turned up fifteen minutes early.

You could simplify it to "He was surprised because his friend was fifteen minutes early".
