1.Why does elder George Bush call his son "Quincy"? Is it because he is similar to John Quincy Adams in many ways?
2. I don't get the difference between "contested election" and "popular vote". The latter seems to be the vote by the whole people, but doesn't America always go through the former?

p3)George W. Bush is the only second man in history to follow in the footsteps of his father and serve as president of the United States. The first was John Quincy Adams, America's sixth president and the son of second president, John Adams. As a matter of fact, the elder George Bush calls his son "Quincy". ..Both men also achieved the presidency in a contested election because neither of them had won the popular vote...

No. He is similar to John Quincy Adams in that they both followed in the footsteps of their fathers to serve as president. The passage tells you that.

Thanks a lot! If any American could answer the second question, it would be highly appreciated!

I'm sorry I read the link for the presidential election, but I still can't get the difference between "contested election" and "popular vote". As I know, presidential candidates go around state to state for popular votes.

It is possible in America for the candidate who receives the votes of the majority of the population (the popular vote) not to be the winner - as it is possible in the UK for a party that receives the most votes to lose the election.

'Contested election' can have several meanings, one of which is 'an election in which people are dissatisfied with the official result and may try to have that result set aside'.
