I don't believe that, according to the text, the purpose of temporal binding is to understand causal relations. Mr. Buehner is of the opinion that the way in which temporal binding works is to be found in an innate ability of people to understand causal relations. There is a huge difference between purpose and ability (capacity, in the text refers to ability).
