Is it proper to replace "developing" in the above with "having/experiencing/ catching/suffering from?" Thanks.

Is it proper to replace "developing" in the above with "having/experiencing/ catching/suffering from?" Thanks.

Having/experiencing/suffering from are O.K. but catching doesn't sound right. You catch a cold but not lung problems.
