I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

The inhabitants of the island demanded that the daily ferry service be immediately reinstated because their livelihood and life depended on it.

Wouldn't simply "the islanders" work, too?

I'd use "livelihoods" as well as "lives​". The islanders are unlikely to share one livelihood (profession).
