[Vocabulary] the lands across the mountains

Is it correct to say "the lands across the mountains" or "the lands behind the mountains"? I usually use across with rivers, roads and something flat, so I'm curious what should I use with mountains.

I suppose that it depends on where the lands are in relation to the mountains. I would use "behind" to indicate those lands which are very close to the mountains. The lands across the Rocky Mountains are said to be very flat - this sentence would refer to the wide and flat portion of the US east of the Rockies. Part of this area may be just behind the mountains and the rest may be a far distance from the mountains.
