"The clouds are thundering and the lightning is flashing." Can this sentence be shortened?

Before working out if it can be shortened, it needs to be made grammatical. "The clouds are thundering" is incorrect. You could use something like "The thunder is crashing ..." - that follows the same pattern as "the lightning is flashing".
