I am wondering if my sentence sounds natural. I am not sure if I used the correct tense in the second part of my sentence. Would you please correct my mistakes?

The man who passed off as a cardiologist had been working for five years before being caught by the authorities.

You could shorten the beginning to "The fake cardiologist...".

If he was successfully impersonating a cardiologist, he passed himself off as one.

I would say "had managed to work in that role for five years" or "had continued to practise for five years" instead of the above.
