I am wondering if we can use "modal verbs" in the second part of double comparatives. My teacher believe that we CAN use modal verbs in these statements. However, I have doubts about it as we use facts in these kinds of sentences.

The more you study, the higher your score is.
The more you study, the higher your score will be.
The more you study, the higher your score might be.

In general, yes, although I find the third one somewhat unnatural in terms of meaning. However, the 'be' verb isn't normally considered a modal verb.

Different modal verbs would of course change the meaning, so not necessarily every modal verb would would work in context. However you can use modals in the second part.

The third sentence is the best of the three as far as meaning is concerned. Study time does not mean anything unless you understand what you are studying.

I would say the following.

The more you understand what you are studying, the higher you score might be.
