News of the tragedy spread quickly around the town.
Temperatures hit 40 degrees centigrade yesterday.
Traffic was heavy and cars were closing up behind each other.

Can we add the article 'The' to these three subject nouns without changing the meaning of the sentences?

Yes, except for "temperatures" but you could use "the" with "temperature". But I prefer all without "the".
