The old man old told the girl to pick up

I saw the word "livid" in a dictionary and decided to use it in my sentence. Would you please correct my mistakes? I am not sure if the punctuation is correct in my first sentence.

The old man told the girl to pick up the empty bottle, she had just tossed in the street, and throw it in the litter bin. She became livid and showered him with swear words and curses and threatened to beat him up. The man shook his head and said, "I'm glad I lived in another time when people respected each other."

I would remove the two commas in the first sentence, use "was" instead of "became" (although I don't think "became" is wrong) and use "abuse" instead of "swear words and curses".

I'd use "I'm glad I lived in a time when ...", not "... another time when ..."

I am wondering which proposition could be used in the following sentence. Is it correct with "in" or should it be "at"?

The old man told me he was born in a time when horses still pulled carts in the street.

Either preposition is possible there. I'd probably use "in", as I would with "in an era when".

How about I grew up in a time- he is still alive.
