I am wondering if my sentences are grammatically correct.

The old professor woke up and saw that someone had smashed the sculpture representing Apollo in his garden. This happened second time this month, which only reinforced his belief that one day a few evil people would destroy the earth out of spite.

This was the second time it had happened that month.

2) Alter the second sentence like this: "The old professor woke up and saw that someone had smashed the sculpture of Apollo in his garden. This was the second time this month that this had happened, which only reinforced his belief that one day a few evil people would destroy the earth out of spite."
I'd cast the second sentence into the past and past perfect for continuity.
