The Pretender
As ruler of the kingdom,
I wear a crown,
But you've got the power--
You can always bring me down.
As you can probably guess,
I feel courage less and less.
I need a reason to face the day
Before I can stay.
You're the Queen of the Jungle.
I'm a mistake, a bungle.
You may treat me rough
If I haven't been good enough.
If you would let me be your slave
I'm sure that I'd behave.
Sometimes I'm a little gruff,
But I'm not very tough.
I'm just a pretender to the throne,
A kingship that's not my own.
I live for your loving attention
Even it it's a love of your own invention.
If you ask me if I once believed you
Then I must plead guilty.
But no matter how things are otherwise different,
I wish you would never forget me.
In the midst of all my grieving,
I found you.
I found a reason to go on living,
So I must give the devil her due.
Time heals, makes you forget. No longer
Do I care so much about all the lying.
If I thought someone would mourn me,
Perhaps I wouldn't be so afraid of dying.
Just one more time, for a few short
Moments, before we're through,
Pretend to give me your love
And I'll pretend to believe you.
