I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct.

The shipwrecked on the uninhabited island lit the large fires, hoping to be seen by some aircraft.

Add "people/survivors/sailors" after "shipwrecked". I'd change "hoping to be seen" to "hoping it would be seen". They're hoping the fire will be seen, leading to their rescue.

I would say large fires rather than the large fires as they're not specific.

So would I. I missed that. I missed the fact that it was plural too, so my ending would be "hoping they would be seen ...".
