What do you call that statue of Mary usually in the yard of devout Catholic people?

There are many images of Mary. . . perhaps the one you may be referring to is 'Our Lady of Lourdes' - she has a blue sash, roses at her feet and a rosary.

The virgin Mary has many representations. And Spain, a catholic country as can be, has no virgins in the yards.

i don't mean the name of the statue of mary, but can I call it an "ALTAR" of do you call it in other names?

Altar - particularly if the statue is on a small shelf, table or pedestal and especially if flowers are placed there
Grotto – when the statue is sited in among rocks and a small garden
or perhaps Shrine

Really, it all depends where the statue is placed, it could also be in a niche or a recess. . .

I think what they have at home is a Grotto.

I was trying to put it in one of my writings but I couldn't the word exactly. Thanks for the list, Svaneska.

blouen, you may enjoy knowing this.

In Maine, where I used to live, it was also very Catholic. In older homes, when they would replace their old cast-iron bathtubs with more modern, installed tubs, the would dig up the ground, and put the tub in upright so about half of it stuck out of the ground. Then they would fill in around it and put a statue of Mary inside, so it looked like a little shrine. They were known as "bathtub Virgins." They are harder to find these days, but seeing one always made me smile.
