I would like to ask about the use of indeed in following.

"Until he was thirty years old, Fotheringay did not believe in miracles. Indeed he discovered his extraordinary powers when he was saying that miracles were quite impossible. He was having a drink at an inn called the Long Dragon."

That usage seems strange to me. Would you explain? Why did the second sentence started with it?

Thank you.

Dramatically introduce a counter or surprising situation for who says the sentence. So isn't it like counter of indeed or my knowledge about dramatically is wrong?

Thank you.
