If "the way(1)" is subject grammatically, I wonder if "the way(2)" is subject or object.

In the second one, "the way you are" describes "you."

The way is a noun phrase preceded by a pronoun and followed by an omitted that. Such a modification (pronoun being modified by noun) might be sort of unusual?
Can we propose that the way is a prepositional phrase in its deep structure?

-I like you in the way that you are.

Adding the "that" is okay, but the "in" is not.
