Hello. I've been reading a book. The boy in the story lives in the country. There are weeds everywhere, so they scratch his legs.
I'm wondering what the underlined part means.
Does it mean that the weeds scratch his legs or something?
The city wasn't far in a fast car, but when you lived out here, alone with your father, and the mud sucked at your boots while the weeds tore your heart out, when you struggled with all that, you didn't often get to the city.
