There would be two mistakes. What bothers me is the present perfect tense after "when". I would accept it as in ".............where those fields have been.............". ".....the rest of....." seems to me redundant. Would there need to be ".......by much of the profession....."?

Was "period" singular or plural in that sentence? In your OP, it's singular, but there is no article in front of it (which is clearly a mistake), so I'm not sure.
