Which of the 3 sentences is best?

Is he still preparing for his exams, or have they already started?

Is he still preparing for his exams, or have his exams already started?

Is he still preparing for his exams, or have the exams already started?

Thanks.

I would probably naturally use "they" but I think all are equally correct.

I agree.

Look:
Is he still preparing for his exams...
In my opinion it is not necessary to repeat both his and exams.

Is he still preparing for his exams, or have they already started?
I highly believe everyone knows that they = his exams.

**Neither a teacher nor a native speaker.**

Cheers!

As the others have implied, there's no problem with the first sentence. And I'd use it.
A better question would be:
Which of these two is better:
Are they still preparing for their exams, or have they already started?
Are they still preparing for their exams, or have their exams already started?
