“Some people in the US believe that aliens do exist. What’s your take on that?”

Now in the above sentence, in the last part of it that asks your take or opinion I have used “that”. Instead of that can I use “this”? I mean though I know using “that” is appropriate but I would like to know why we are using “that” here? why can’t we use “this” here? Could you please explain when to use this and when to use that ?

One rule I follow is, if the thing is near me, I use "this". If the thing is not near me, I use "that". So, I am holding a document in my hand - "What do you think about this"? I am talking about a document that was just signed 1,000 miles away - "What do you think about that"?

why can’t we use “this” here?

We can- it's a question of how close we feel to what is said. Here, the person could be using that to put distance between them and the ideas of Aliens existing.
