The following sentence is a fragment of a talk between aliens about planet Earth I received recently. Is my translation good or does it need improvement?

Though spending significant amounts of their resources in what they call astronautics (laughter in the background), they didn't even manage to fly to a nearby rock called Mars, which is only a stone's throw away. (laughter in the backgrund again)

I would use "on" instead of "in" there. Otherwise, I like it that the aliens are making fun of us.
