Do thoughts take any kind of quotation marks?
I searched a bit and none of the web pages I found on quotation marks even brought it up. So I guess not. Not sure though. :?

So would this be correct?
They have come to ruin me, he thought in despair.

Thanks

You can use quotation marks for thoughts. You can also use italics.

So are the quotes optional? Can I not use italics or quotes?
And would I use simple or double quotes?

Thanks again

Traditionally, double quotes were used, but nowadays I don't think it matters. I use single quotes because they're easier to type. ;-)

Are they? And if so, are the italics optional too? Could you just leave it minus the quotation marks and the italics?

Yes, both the italics and quotes are optional.
