Except for the 'the', [it's a possibility] it sounds okay, A. It probably doesn't mean a line like at a movie, maybe a better word would be 'mob', but the general idea is the same.

Thousands of mobs were waiting to welcome the superstar.

Not thousands of mobs as a mob is the group taken as a whole. These people are all of one mob, the one to view the SS.
