to depend on vs to be dependent on

Hello. Is there a difference between the two? Are there any cases where you can use one and not the other? Any help would be appreciated. =)

'to depend on' can have a similar meaning to 'rely on' wheareas 'to be dependent on' suggests a financial, physical or emotional need.
