What's the meaning of "he gets the plane airborne"?

Mercenaries are trying to fly away once wrapped up the mission

Quite confusing sentence. Is it just referring to get a plane to fly away? The problem is this "airborne" at the end. It seems a noun, but the word can only be an adverb or an adjective ¿?

Thank You
