What does mean "going on to show"?

Regarding the below phrase:

"It then goes on to show that the standard economics problem of utility maximisation is formally equivalent to..."

Correction: Regarding the phrase below

It'd be better if you provided the context before that.
The first thing that comes to my mind is:
"After that it (I don't know what "it" refers to) continues to show that the standard economics problem of utility maximisation is formally equivalent to..."

It's not "continues to show," it's that it "goes on" to the next thing and that next thing is "to show" whatever.
