I wouldn't say "way back."
what was going on there then.
what was going on there back then. (It was a long time ago.)
what was going on there way back then. (It was a very long time ago.)
what was going on there at that time.

Note that saying "I had not clue about "then" may suggest you do know now.

My brother was taking $20 from the neighbor to mow his lawn and then paying me $10 to do it. I had no clue back then. (Now, I know.)
vs.
I don't know what my brother was up to. I have no clue about what he was doing back then. (Now, I still don't know.)
