to hit (on) some common ground

Somebody wrote in an article in a US mag:
"We had hit on some common ground."

Is there any (subtle) difference in meaning compared to
"We had hit some common ground.", please?

Thank you in advance for any helpful hint.

The normal verb is find some common ground.

"We had found some common ground."

hit on has this meaning. hit doesn't work.
