I am wondering if my sentence is grammatically correct. I have used "punters", which is BrE word for "customers".

To much surprise of the punters, a well-known singer gave an impromptu performance in a local pub.

Say:

Much to the surprise of the punters....

(I am pretty sure that's the way it's said even in British English. (But I might be corrected.))

Much to the surprise of the punters....

It works, as does simply to the surprise of the punters. Greatly to the surprise of the punters would also be possible.
