1) Tom said Tim is mean. He said it two days after Tim had said they were friends.

2) Tom is saying Tim is mean. He is saying this two days after Tim said they were friends.

3) Tom said Tim is mean. It came on the heels of Tim saying they were friends.

Please check my sentences.

This is just two days after Tim said they were friends!

3) Tom said Tim is mean. It came on the heels of Tim saying they were friends.:tick: (grammatical but rather unnatural)

See above. The continuous tense in the second sentence of group #2 doesn't work. It's OK in the first sentence because Tom repeatedly says Tim is mean.
