Tom was having difficulty finding his friends on virtual world. Finally he found his way to his friends. To reach them he teleported himself to different places and continued doing it until the distance had been reduced to a walking distance. It was difficult to understand whether he was going near them or far from them.

Tom was having difficulty finding his friends [STRIKE]on[/STRIKE] in the* virtual world. Finally, he found his way to his friends. To reach them, he teleported himself to different places and continued doing it/so until the [STRIKE]distance[/STRIKE] interval** had been reduced to walking distance. However, at times it was difficult for him to tell [STRIKE]understand[/STRIKE] whether he was going [STRIKE]near[/STRIKE] towards them or [STRIKE]far[/STRIKE] away from them.

* This assumes that we are talking about a known/specific/previously mentioned virtual world.
** "Distance" is not wrong, but I used the alternative "interval" to avoid repetition of "distance".

But why "in" for virtual world not "on"? We use "on" for something that is represented on an electronic device. Am I correct?

The actual word used after the preposition is 'world' rather than 'device'.

'Device' has not been mentioned.

Okay, so if we talk about virtual world without mentioning laptop or computer than also we need to use "in"?
