What does "took to the field" mean in the following?

Let's start with expert intuition. Herbert Simon won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1978 partially for his research on how experts think, and in the 1990s Gary Klein took to the field to study experts in action, such as firefighters, emergency room nurses, and soldiers in battle.

Thank you.

***** NOT A TEACHER *****

Hello,

I believe that it means something like: "He went out into the real world to research his topic."

So he visited fire stations, hospitals, and battlegrounds (where soldiers were actually fighting at the time).

*****

James was sick, so he took to his bed for a week. = He went to bed/ stayed in bed for a week.
