Is "trod" really the past tense of "tread"?

In XXX the Court restated its main rulings from YYY; however, it also trod new ground by recognizing...

"Trod" sounds weird.

"Trod" sounds weird.

It is indeed the past tense of tread. Tread - trod - have trodden.
