What do you think is the difference between "trust in" and "trust"? Does the latter imply shorter and temporary "confidence"?

rp88)Most of us believe that we can trust in technology to solve our problems. Whatever problem you name, you can also name hoped-for technological solution...

There is absolutely no difference in meaning; only in style. Some might think that saying "Put your trust in me" sounds more convincing/romantic/appealing than simply saying "Trust me".
