What do you think is the difference between "trust in" and "trust"? Does the latter imply shorter and temporary "confidence"?

There is absolutely no difference in meaning; only in style. Some might think that saying "Put your trust in me" sounds more convincing/romantic/appealing than simply saying "Trust me".
