Two verbs in sentence

My friend write some thing like this:
"Is the only thing people are interested in today earning more money?"

Is there any grammar error in that question?

It would read better as "Is earning more money the only thing people are interested in today?"

"is" is the verb of second clause so I dont think you can ask question like that. The verb of first clause should be the verb that move to front.
