I am reading Out of Africa by I. Dinesen,
"And under the ordeal Kaninu’s heart was slowly breaking, like the bones and tissue of those people who, in old times, were put to the torture of ever increased weights laid on to them."
Please could a teacher or member tell me the meaning of underlined words. I guess it is "crushing" torture but not sure.
