In the villa there is a large basement _____ the sitting room.
A. under B. below C. beneath D. underneath

As a non-native, I feel hopelessly confused. I think all are correct.

Is the difference crystally clear for a native?

How can I tell them apart?

Thanks

Jason

I would use "underneath," but any of the words could be used.

, but my (not very strong) preference would be for under;-). This question has been asked before - search in the 'Similar Threads' list at the foot of this page.
