I heard this sentence in a film:

"I don't understand about this tunnel."

The meaning was approximately: I don't understand what it is for, or why they are digging it or something of the sort.
But can the verb "understand" be used that way?
understand+about+object
(I know we have "what I don't understand about X is that...", but this isn't the same thing.)

"I don't understand this tunnel" is correct. Dropping the "about."
