I signed up for five classes- three mandatory classes and two electives.

I have seen the sentence in my book and I was wondering if I can use colon, : instead of the hyphen, - in the sentence without changing the meaning?

ex) I signed up for five classes: three mandatory classes and two electives.

What do you think? Thank you so much.

You could. By the way, that's a dash, not a hyphen.
