In here;

"Some environmentalist sailors also add that they prefer to lose their jobs and become unemployed rather.....whale species."

I thought it should be "than killing" but answer is "than kill". I don't understand why?

Thanks.

The form of "kill" needs to match the form of "lose".

I prefer to lose than [to] win.
He prefers to eat than [to] drink.
The sailors prefer to lose their jobs than [to] kill whales.

If you want to use "than killing", you have to change the start of the sentence to something like "The sailors prefer having a job ... to killing whales.
