Hi teachers, "Is" or "was":which one is suitable in the context?

I gave my dad a mobile phone last year.
This is/was because I can contact him whenever I like.

That was so I could contact him whenever I wanted to.

If eheneve is supposed to be whenever, it's correct.

Sorry teacher, that was a typing error. I have coorected it. Correct me If I am wrong: I think when I say "I gave my dad a mobile phone last year. That was so that I could contact him whenver I wanted to", it's the another way of saying "I gave my dad a mobile phone last year so that I could contact him whenever I wanted to". But when I say "I gave my dad a mobile phone last year. This is so that I can contact him whenever I want to.", it's another way of saying "I gave my dad a mobile phone last year so that I can contact him whenever I want to." Am I right?

I gave my dad a mobile phone last year.
Thisis/was because I can contact her whenever I like.

I assume there's a typo in this sentence as well, unless your dad is a woman.
