I'm writing work report and I usually find it difficult what verb to use to narrate is it past tense or present perfect tense?

[STRIKE]I'm writing[/STRIKE] I (regularly) write work reports, and I usually find it difficult [STRIKE]what verb[/STRIKE] to [STRIKE]use to narrate is it[/STRIKE] decide whether the past (simple/continuous) tense or the present perfect tense is appropriate.

Note that "narrate" is a transitive verb.
