Hi all

Parts of speech are a weakness for me, and I am working on them, especially "verbs".

Can someone please approve my answers below (highlighted in bold):

  1. He was .......... under a tree. (sat/seated)
  2. She was .......... on a couch. (lying, laying)
My rationale for both questions is that "was" is an auxiliary verb and that "sat" and "laying" are past participles. Am I correct. Please let me know?

Sorry, both options were wrong. Yes, was is an auxiliary here. Seated, participle of to seat, lie - lying present participle.

Sat is the past simple of sit.

laying, present participle of to lay
