Question 1:
Could you tell me what the root of "precipice" is? Is it "cip"? If yes, what does it mean? How about its prefix and suffix? Thank you for helping.

"fall to great depth," from Fr. précipice, from L. præcipitium "a steep place," lit. "a fall or leap," from præceps (gen. præcipitis) "steep, headlong, headfirst," from præ- "forth" + caput "head"

Used to refer to a steep rockface from the 17th century.

Thank you, Anglika. You are very knowledgeable.

BTW, may I ask two more questions? What does "L.L." stand for in the following definition? And how could I find the meanings of the abbreviations used in the Online Etymology Dict.?

icon:1572, "image, figure, representation," from L.L. icon, from Gk. eikon "likeness, image, portrait," related to eikenai "be like, look like." Eastern Church sense is attested from 1833. Computing sense first recorded 1982.
