That's right. Both are correct. The difference between 'was holding' and 'held' has to do with continuity. 'was holding' expresses a state of on going, like this,

The class was holding a meeting last Wednesday afternoon when the fire alarm went off. (i.e., while we were meeting, the alarm sounded) Both the meeting and the alarm happened during the same time.
