(1).The class was holding a meeting last Wednesday afternoon.
(2).The class held a meeting last Wednesday afternoon.
Which of the two questions is correct? Why?
Please answer the question for me. Thank you very much again!

That's right. :D Both are correct. The difference between 'was holding' and 'held' has to do with continuity. 'was holding' expresses a state of on going, like this,

The class was holding a meeting last Wednesday afternoon when the fire alarm went off. (i.e., while we were meeting, the alarm sounded) Both the meeting and the alarm happened during the same time.

All the best,
