Are my sentences correct'?
My chances of getting a well paid job are rather poor.
Thereby I was formerly told the opposite.

The first sentence is OK. I have no idea what the second means. Perhaps you meant something like "Previously, I was told the opposite".

I would hyphenate "well-paid" in the first sentence.
